Our free BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator helps you understand whether your weight is healthy for your height. BMI is a simple screening tool that can indicate whether you're underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese based on World Health Organization (WHO) standards.
Did you know? The BMI (body mass index bmi calculator) formula was developed in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet. While it has limitations, it remains the most widely used screening tool for weight categories worldwide.
Thousands of users check their BMI because:
BMI Range | Weight Status | Health Risk |
---|---|---|
Below 18.5 | Underweight | Possible nutritional deficiency and osteoporosis |
18.5 - 24.9 | Normal weight | Low risk (healthy range) |
25 - 29.9 | Overweight | Moderate risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes |
30 and Above | Obese | High risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, metabolic disorders |
The BMI formula is simple:
BMI = weight (kg) Γ· heightΒ² (mΒ²)
For example, a person who weighs 70kg and is 1.75m tall:
BMI = 70 Γ· (1.75 Γ 1.75) = 22.9 (Normal weight)
While BMI is useful, it has some limitations:
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most adults. This range is associated with the lowest risk of weight-related health problems.
The BMI calculation is the same for both sexes, but women tend to have more body fat than men at the same BMI. Our calculator accounts for this in the healthy weight range.
BMI is a good screening tool but not a diagnostic measure. It doesn't directly measure body fat. Athletes may have high BMI due to muscle, while older adults may have normal BMI but high body fat.
No, children and teens need age- and sex-specific BMI calculations. Our calculator is for adults 20+. For children, consult a pediatric growth chart.
Consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend dietary changes, exercise, or other interventions based on your individual health profile.
